International conference 21-23 February 2003 in Lichtenfels (Oberfranken)

"Overcoming Boundaries: The Process of EU-Enlargement and Visions of Europe from a Gender Political Perspective"

About the conference

Franken-Akademie Schloß Schney
Europe is on the verge of one of its most significant changes: In 2004 the European Union will accept 10 new countries. This enlargement is bound to change the face of Europe fundamentally. The forthcoming economic and political integration will bring to an end decades of separation between the Eastern bloc countries and the rest of Europe.

In order to gain membership, the candidate countries are required to bring their economic, legal and democratic standards in line with those of the European Union. Among the entrance criteria was a commitment to the principle of equal opportunities for women and men and to gender mainstreaming. Many women experience the transformation process as ambivalent: On the one hand they see the potential to move onwards and on the other hand there is disappointment.

The conference will highlight how particular countries such as Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary shape this process and how this affects the situation of women in relation to men. What is the state of women's politics in these countries? Which support structures can women use and what are their political demands? What role does the European Union play in all this?

Like the candidate countries, the European Union must prepare itself, too, so that the numerous member states and their sometimes contrary interests remain governable. What priority will the theme of equal rights have in the newly constituted European Union? What is the position of equal opportunities politics in the European Union and how it is implemented nationally?

In a comparative debate we will look at the different assumptions and framework conditions that underlie 'western' and 'eastern' politics of women's equality. Where are the common links and which common visions of Europe can be developed from these links?

The target groups for this conference are women and men on both sides of the current European Union boundaries. The conference aims to inform and support networks through personal exchange.

The conference languages are German and English (simultaneous interpretation will be provided).
